Samaria Gorge

The gorge of Samaria or ‘’Faraggas’’ for locals is situated in the National park of Samaria and it’s the longest gorge in Europe with a length of 18 km opened to public during the day time from May to October (during this period it may be closed only in case of rains, strong winds or any other danger).

It is a national park of unique geological value, stunning natural beauty, rich in plants and animal life protected under international law. In Samaria you will see forests of huge pine and cypress trees, wild goats that local call agrimia or kri kri. For thousands of years, it was a safe secret base of operations for the locals who were fighting the conquerors for freedom.
The most common and easy way to visit Samaria Gorge is to reach Omalos by public bus, walk through the gorge from the entrance at Xyloskalo (Omalos) to the exit in Agia Roumeli where plenty of ferries take the hikers to Sfakia in order to take the public bus to Chania.
